If you frottage hard enough, will it catch on fire?

Modern Fuel presents an interactive workshop hosted by artist-academic Alex Simpson. This workshop seeks to engage critical theory while offering a space for playful investigation of different mediums and techniques. In particular, we will take up the technique of frottage: gently rubbing graphite over thin paper to record the texture of a surface.

During “If you frottage hard enough, will it catch on fire?” we will consider a range of texts that broadly share a curiosity towards questions of ethics, critical distance and love in research and art practice: what leads us to our research; what obligations do we have, and to whom? What are the details that can ensnare us in a project? As a whole, the texts loosely consider relationships between storytelling, art making and writing (academic and otherwise).

Attendees are not required to bring anything to the workshop; necessary materials and supplies will be provided. The workshop will begin with a discussion about the literature that has informed the theme, followed by hands-on activity and informal discussion.

We encourage you to RSVP to Modern Fuel by emailing [email protected] Please put "Modern Fuel Workshop" in the subject line of your email.
